Steele Creek Deck Builder

Steele Creek covers southwest Charlotte between the airport and the Catawba — Berewick, the Palisades, Rivergate, and the newer subdivisions along Shopton Road and Steele Creek Road. Most of this housing went up after 2000, so unlike the older parts of the city we are rarely replacing a deck that has failed. We are usually adding the outdoor space the builder left off the original plan.

A builder-grade concrete patio is the starting point on most of these lots: a slab off the back door and nothing else. The common project is a deck or screened room built over or alongside that slab and tied into the existing grade, often with a hardscape landing that gives the yard a second usable zone instead of one crowded one.

The Palisades and the streets closest to the Catawba have longer, more open lots and in places genuine water views, and that is where multi-level designs and larger covered structures earn their cost. Further inland the lots are flatter and tighter, and a single-level deck with a screened section does considerably more for the money than a complicated multi-level build.

Everything here permits through Charlotte-Mecklenburg, and nearly all of these subdivisions carry an active HOA with an architectural review step. Because the homes are recent, those boards tend to be specific about matching material and color to the original construction, so we pull the neighborhood's standards before selecting decking rather than after.
